m31andy: (evil!sam)
[personal profile] m31andy
Well, I keep misplacing really good fan-fic, so I thought I would put them all down on a list. Please comment below if you've got any recs that I've missed so far (and I might add them...) This will probably form the basis of my [livejournal.com profile] crack_van recs if/when I finally get asked to drive the van for Life on Mars.

Note: These recs contain a few words describing what I like about the fics. There'll be spoilers for all episodes, ESPECIALLY the final episode.

Life on Mars Fic Recs

Post Second Season

All These Editions of You by [livejournal.com profile] dorcas_gustine (Sam/Gene, Sam/Annie, 18 certificate. 50,000 words).

There’s lots of plot and lots of intrigue. Dorcas gets the voices perfectly and the tone of the fic is just right – just like the show there’s humour, action and horror in large doses. And it turns out that Gene even calls Sam ‘Gladys’ in his thoughts.

Palimpsest by [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8 (Gen, 18 for dark themes, 10,500 words).

Wonderfully dark and Sam gets whumped a lot. But don’t worry, he does get to learn this time. Palimpsest - The overwriting and reusing of parchment so that different texts can exist on one page.

I Have Followed You Into The Dark by [livejournal.com profile] pink_bagels (Gen, 12, 1,200 words).

Post 2.08 again. Sam gets a rude awakening from Morgan. Dark, oh so dark. And lovely and bitter. Sort of 85% cocoa solid chocolate in a way.

A Godawful Small Affair by [livejournal.com profile] lm_jillybean (Gen, 700 words, 12).

Episode tag to 2.08, the reactions of Sam’s family and friends to his death. Because we really do need to see that Sam wasn’t alone in 2007, and that whatever else, his decision to commit suicide *does* have repercussions.

All You Zombies by [livejournal.com profile] dorcas_gustine. (Life on Mars, mild Sam/Annie, 1,363 words, PG)

Creepy as hell and so utterly wonderful, Dorcas takes Sam through the slow demise of a fantasy. It’s so bright these days, like a summer that’s never going to end.

Starving on the Jump Down by [livejournal.com profile] hmpf (Gen, 375 words, 15)

[livejournal.com profile] hmpf has a talent for placing words just so. Capturing the essence of a moment perfectly, the hopes, the fears, the inevitable downfall, all in as few words as possible. Some quite upsetting imagery as this is Sam's thoughts at the end.

Unashamed Porn

A Life on Mars/The Professionals cross-over trilogy (Bodie/Sam, Doyle/Sam, Bodie/Sam/Doyle, Sam/Gene, slash, 20,000 words, 18 for adult themes).
One in Every Port by [livejournal.com profile] dorcas_gustine
A Meeting of Minds by [livejournal.com profile] bistokids
Old Habits Die Hard by [livejournal.com profile] dorcas_gustine

One Better by [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon (Annie/Phyllis, 1,200 words, 18 – warning for spanking)

Preludes, Nocturnes, and other Arrangements by [livejournal.com profile] thimpressionist (Sam/Gene/Annie, 2,500 words, 18)

Very, very tasty threesome. There needs to be more, seriously. Music porn and everyone getting a bit.

Man Hunt by [livejournal.com profile] hambelandjemima. (Sam/Gene, Sam/Annie, 1,200 words, 18)

Again, unashamed porn, right up my alley (and blamed on me, what can I say?). Annie is looking for Gene. Lift!porn, definitely one of my kinks!

Horror

Actual Reality by [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8 (Gen, 390 words, PG)

Written in comments to one of my posts and then posted it up. Creepy, bizarre and really, really tasty.

Some Days Nothing Goes Right by [livejournal.com profile] evil_demandred. (Slash, Sam/Gene, 8,900 words, 18)

Again, scary, nasty and so vivid it hurts.

At the Round Earth's Imagined Corners by [livejournal.com profile] jamie_dakin. (Slash, Sam/Gene, 2,500 words, 18)

Okay, this one is fairly uncategorizible, really hot sex but there's really, really scary bits. Jamie does a wonderful job of combining the two in a way that just floats, the description vivid and painful and frightening, all at the same time.

Evil!Sam

Qu'est-ce que c'est? by [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8. (Gen, 1,200 words, 12)

One of the two fics that got me onto my love of psycho!Sam, this is a wonderfully chilling fic, written from the point of view of Chris.

Ten Dozen Roses by [livejournal.com profile] lm_jillybean. (Het, Sam/Maya, 5,000 words, 15)

The other fic that got me onto psycho!Sam bent. Maya investigates the Tyler Crime Empire, Sam, for all his evilness is so in character here, it's scary. What would happen if he just let go?

Straw by [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon. (Gen, 10,600 words, 18)

Wonderfully creepy with a shocking end, people are being murdered. Sam doesn't know anything about it.

Actually, thinking about it, I think I've missed out loads, but it's lunchtime, I'm due some more ibuprofen when I can get a sandwich (and by gods, I know it), so I'll have another think after lunch.

Thanks both for reccing me and also giving me more stuff to read! And reminders, in some cases. I really need to read All These Editions of You. XD

Apart from yesterday, I have mostly been scarily productive in both my soon-to-be-former job and my future one, which has left little time for reading (or writing) of fic. WOE. XD

However, I present you with a humble gift. Here you go...XD

Okay, *that's* very disturbing.

(thousands of little tentacles? The Japanese really do have a national kink...)

I know I've missed out loads of really good fic. Which is annoying in the extreme. Mind you, for given values of recs, I suppose one just wanders over to [livejournal.com profile] dorcas_gustine's Master List. There really is that much good fic in the fandom!

SRSLY. This falls into a category J describes as, "How has Japan not imploded yet?!?!?" XD

Oh, oh! I love the sound of "Ten Dozen Roses", and [livejournal.com profile] lm_jillybean is an amazing writer...all her fics are wonderful. I'm so off to read this one now. Psycho!Sam is my latest LoM kink. :D

Ten Dozen Roses is amazing. Seriously.

*cough*

Trying desperately not to pimp my own fic here, but you *have* read the Psycho!Samatic Cycle, right?

I'm reading it now and it really is. It's going straight into my Memories once I'm finished.

I'll check your fic out. I always welcome any kind of LoM fic recs, so hooray for self-pimping! :-)

Well, in the interests of self-pimpage then, I've written a couple of other evil!Sam fics.

Triptych: DNA, Replication and Full Circle (Gen, 1,360 words, PG)

Family (15, Sam/Maya, 900 words, AU)

Also, sort of evil!Samish: Labyrinth (15, Sam/Annie, Sam/Maya, Sam/Ruth, 3,300 words)
