Royal Legion vs. the BNP

Whatever you think about the Red Poppy symbol, the suborning of such by Nick Griffin for his own personal interest (I assume to show his 'patriotism' - hah... ) is definitely Not On.

The Poppy is there to support for all British soldiers, not just those who happen to have 'white skin', Mr. Griffin. Over a million men of ethnic groups, from all over the Empire, volunteered in the First World War, almost three million in the Second. And yes, that does include the Gurkhas*.

* Who were never part of the British Empire, interestingly.

Thanks for posting this link. I'm really glad to hear that the Royal Legion is taking a stance.

Ugh. Unpleasant little git. And that's putting it mildly.
I looked around the BNP website once for first-hand information on those idiots- made my skin crawl.
Pathetic little flat-hander.

I wasn't aware that the 'British' National Party were trying to commandeer the poppy symbol. Now if we could only get them to drop the term 'British' from their name I'd be even happier!

You might find Jon Stewart's coverage of the European Elections on the Daily Show entertaining - wait for Griffin's response.

* - there really should be some suitable epithet for him, Boss-Eyed Gog is a bit lengthy and not quite effective enough.

Re the Gurkhas - nope, they're effectively mercenaries. Still, that shouldn't prevent residence in the country (not that I'm implying that that's what you meant).

But I think the RBL are missing something in saying they aim to be non-partisan politically, and then ask one politician not to wear the poppy because they don't like his politics. That doesn't compute.

Griffin is pretty undeniably an odious racist, but whether that makes him unfit to wear a poppy is a bit trickier - if he is, surely plenty of other people are too?
