Royal Legion vs. the BNP
Whatever you think about the Red Poppy symbol, the suborning of such by Nick Griffin for his own personal interest (I assume to show his 'patriotism' - hah... ) is definitely Not On.
The Poppy is there to support for all British soldiers, not just those who happen to have 'white skin', Mr. Griffin. Over a million men of ethnic groups, from all over the Empire, volunteered in the First World War, almost three million in the Second. And yes, that does include the Gurkhas*.
* Who were never part of the British Empire, interestingly.

Date: 2009-06-16 01:36 pm (UTC)I looked around the BNP website once for first-hand information on those idiots- made my skin crawl.
Pathetic little flat-hander.

Date: 2009-06-17 08:30 pm (UTC)* - there really should be some suitable epithet for him, Boss-Eyed Gog is a bit lengthy and not quite effective enough.
Re the Gurkhas - nope, they're effectively mercenaries. Still, that shouldn't prevent residence in the country (not that I'm implying that that's what you meant).

Date: 2009-06-17 11:36 pm (UTC)Griffin is pretty undeniably an odious racist, but whether that makes him unfit to wear a poppy is a bit trickier - if he is, surely plenty of other people are too?
